The year 2024 ushered in a rare and massive bloom of alpine rhododendrons, yet it also revealed an extremely violent rainy season in the mountains. The year 2024 ushered in a rare and massive bloom of alpine rhododendrons, yet it also revealed an extremely violent rainy season in the mountains. With their acute sensitivity to the environment, rhododendrons serve as a medium for the artist to explore the relationship between climate change and ecological memory.
Comprising 92 metal etchings corresponding to each day of summer in the mountains, the work is based on the maximum temperatures and precipitation levels throughout the rainy season. Here, the artist physically "etches" invisible climate fluctuations onto the surface of the blossoming flowers. In this sequence, viewers can intuitively perceive the rhythm of three months—shifting from chill to scorching heat, punctuated by sudden downpours. The blooming and withering of these flowers act as nature's silent memory, bearing the weight of environmental shifts often imperceptible to humans. Hidden within this ecological memory is a stark reminder: a spectacular bloom is also a dangerous climate warning.
