Xiong Yu - Time Node

July 13 - September 10, 2013

A Thousand Plateaus Art Space

A Thousand Plateaus Art Space is pleased to present the artist Xiong Yu’s solo exhibition “Xiong Yu - Time Node”, which is also the opening exhibition after A Thousand Plateaus Art Space’s first relocation since it was founded seven years ago. On the first and third floors, you will see Xiong Yu’s recent works during the past three years, there also includes the artist’s new exploration.

Xiong Yu is an iconic artist of 1970s and 1980s. Many characters of the generation born in mid-1970s have been presented in his paintings, such as the dream, the cartoon-like visual style, a kind of hallucinatory, and the “cool” of image and color. There is always a unique atmosphere of theatrical performance and elegant visual signs in his works. He has also triggered our thinking of growth and the present living condition.

As an artist who was educated in the collage for ten years, Xiong Yu knows classical painting well. Talking about his recent works, he mentions his understanding and borrowing from the European classical paintings - the classical charm, instead of falling into the rigid pattern of classical paintings. In the new creation, he continues the theatrical atmosphere of his early works, but fills the appearance of the story with the sense of breath. At the same time, he also hopes that both the characters in the picture and himself are silent and that he “pours the soul into the characters” through the substantive contact on canvas. On the disposition of the recent works, except for more loose brushwork, Xiong Yu starts to present the same content in different forms. He seems no longer immersed in the emotion expressed in the painting, but begins to rethink and summary. Such as the representative works of this exhibition - one “Time Node” of the “Longest Journey”.

Xiong Yu was born in 1975 in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province. In 1995, he was graduated from the Affiliated High School of Sichuan Academy of Fine arts. In 1999, he was graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts. In 2002, he received Master’s degree from the Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts. He is now assistant professor in Art College of Sichuan University and curator of Museum of Sichuan University. His works have been collected by many public art institutions and collectors, including Museu De Arte De Sao Paulo (MASP), Shenzhen Art Museum, HeXiangning Art Museum and Wuhan Art Museum.
