It occurs to me what " observation " truly means: not taking what you see for granted. Indeed, observing in this manner doesn't always yield clear conclusions; it might lead to a myth (might be an enlightening one nonetheless). Astronomers also tell us that the most light-sensitive spot in the human eye is probably not the center of vision, but out on the periphery of sight. Thus, if we are to find a very dim star, we'd better see from the corner of the eye rather than staring straight into the night sky. Similarly, a place often depicted as marginal and trivial might turn out obscurely central if we pivot our perspective.
