邹思妗 Zou Sijin China, b. 1986

Overview

Zou Sijin was born in Chongqing in 1986. As a young artist, her work possesses a unique attitude and mature thinking, and she boldly expresses her attempts onto the canvas. She shows complete understanding of the feelings and attitudes of her subjects while also maintaining a feeling of detachment. Her depictions are lyrical but it is unclear whether they are affirmative or negative, sympathetic or supportive, or possess any clear attitude. It appears she enjoys observing life itself. This could come from a work by Milan Kundera, or to go a step further, it could come from the influence of existentialism. This influence is not from theory, but through the current reality of the world and Zou’s personal experiences. In fact, her works are herself, or on a higher level, they are the reappearance of the state of life to a new generation of artists. Therefore, even though Europeans, Americans, and Western scenes which do not reflect her Chinese cultural identity often appear in Zou’s works, they originate in the current state of China.
